Types of Account > Shares Based Accounts

These accounts invest in the stockmarket and aim to give your child a better return than they would get in a savings account.

The difference in the return that your child gets when they reach age 18 could be very wide between the different types of account. If a savings account earned interest of 5% p.a (which is currently a typical return) and a shares based account achieved an average return of 9% p.a (which is clearly not guaranteed, but is achievable), the difference in the value of the account when your child reached 18 would be:

  • Savings account £460
  • Shares based account £900

These figures are based on the value of voucher only and assume management charges of 1.5% p.a for the shares based account. The figures were produced using the calculator provided on the Government's official CTF website. The calculator can be accessed by clicking here.

We offer the shares based account from The Children's Mutual, which:

  • Has annual management charges of no more than 1.5% p.a - so the management charges are no more expensive than a stakeholder account - and some funds charge a little as 1% p.a! #
  • Offers access to a range of investment funds, managed by some of the biggest fund management groups in the UK (Gartmore, INVESCO Perpetual, UBS and Insight Investment).
  • Offers access to two ethical investment options.

The Children's Mutual are the only UK company that specialises exclusively in savings for children.

The information pack contains details of the all the funds available and three typical portfolios for your child's voucher:

If you have already received an information pack from The Children's Mutual, if you send it back to us to process for you we will make a donation to Save the Children. The charges are the same on the account whether it is bought direct from The Children's Mutual or through us - the advantage of allowing us to process it for you is that you will be helping vulnerable children around the world by doing so.
